Just courios if the true nature of the egg shaped tire has been determined? I thought of a few more things that could be leading to this and just wanted to know where it stood.

Well after going to 4 different stores I finally found a grease pencil. I tried to draw a consistant circle around the rim and tire and can't. To do that accurately I think I need something completly rigid that holds the pencil and sets center on the rim. Too difficult to keep the dowel and pen the same as I go around marking the tire. I think I'll go back to Discount and request that someone go for a test drive with me. I think its pretty obvious a tire is bad. I'll go next week and follow up. Thanks!

This thread is old, but it doesn't sound like it is fixed. Out of round tires are pretty common, especially in the bigger sizes and treads that have big blocks. I would ask to be allowed to watch them be balanced. They probably won't like you being in the shop, so go when it's not too busy and maybe take a pair of safety glasses so they can't use that as an excuse. When the tire spins up, stand straight in line with it to see if the lines in the tread move side to side. Also, have them spin the tires without the hood down (on most Hunter balancing machines you just tap the brake twice and it will spin), get down level with the top of the tire and watch for a hop in the tread. In addition to this, you can get them to road force balance the tires and it will give you an actual weight that is required to get the tire to run correctly. If they want to charge more for it, just ask them to run the roller on it once to get an idea if the tires are really bad. If you do find a bad tire, they may not help at all because they might not consider it to be a warranty issue. You might be able to tame the tires by putting airsoft beads in them AFTER they have been spin balanced. Also, maybe check a different location.

I had one like that on my 1977 J10 pickup . I thought I had front end problems so I took it to a goodyear store. Turns out it was the tire. It had a broken belt. It wasn't a GoodYear tire so they were not afraid to admit it was the tire causing the problem.

Well, finally had the tire changed out under warranty. I think that I drive more than I thought on the street and I guess I'm getting old because the rough ride to and from the trails is starting to get to me. If I had the $$$ I'd sell them and get some new MTR's.
